If you are craving for a trek in the high Himalayas of Uttarakhand, here is one for you. Though the Chipla Kedar Trek may not be a popular trek, it is very rewarding and thrilling one nonetheless.
One of the main offerings of this trek is a sacred water tank called Chipla Kund, the trekking route provides opportunities for catching sight of several exotic mountain animals.
Located at a height of about 16000 ft, Chipla Kund is also known as the Gupt Kailasha (secret Kailash), an abode of Lord Shiva. Every two years, locals from 40 villages in the Kumaon Himalayas gather at this site for a 5-day long festival.
On day 1, you can reach Haldwani or Kathgodam by an overnight train or bus. After breakfast, depart for Dharchula for the night.
On day 2, after breakfast, leave for Tawaghat (19 km). Trek for 5 km or so to reach Bunga via Khela village. Here, you can camp overnight and even enjoy the local Chanchari dance and local tribal meal by planning in advance.
On day 3, post breakfast, trek for 10 km to reach Pinkhu (Tilargarhi) at a height of 12000 ft. Stay at a camp for the night.
On day 4, reach Talagarh (8 km) via trek. On the way, visit Brahmakund (12500 ft), which is famous for being the abode of Uttarakhand’s famous flower Brahmakamal. Spend the night in Talagarh.
On day 5, trek for 10 km to Pataudkund (16000 ft). Trekkers may stop by at Sindwari, Chiplakund, Kakraulkund and Jauly. Pataulkund is a water body, and is believed to house a local deity.
On day 6, post breakfast, trek for 12 km to reach Girchi, and spend the night here.
On day 7, trek all the way to Duku (10 km) from Girchi. On the way, you can make a pit stop at Tilandili, which is a place for honouring the departed ancestors of the family. This trek is especially meant for the lovers of wilderness and wildlife. Stay for the night at Duku.
Finally, on day 8, drive back to Haldwani through Pithoragarh. If time allows, stop by at Bhimtal to enjoy the greenery around.
